You need safe, ranged damage. Axe has to get close.
A great Call. A team too far away to help. Check first.
Start here: catch a target, return damage, then add the defense your next fight needs.

These are our editorial build paths. Labels describe their purpose, not measured popularity or win rate. Click an item for its use. Each stage is an inventory snapshot: keep earlier items, use consumables, upgrade components, and replace small items as space runs out. Boots, defenses, and late slots can change with the draft.

Axe starts fights at close range. This guide covers a simple fight plan, the spell interactions that matter, and three habits to make your next jump more useful.
Axe is a melee Strength hero who forces nearby enemies to attack him. Our recommended role is Offlane, position 3: get your key items, create an opening, and let your team follow.
Your job is to catch a useful target, not simply absorb every spell. Use the builds above as starting points. If your team cannot reach the fight, a perfect-looking jump can still be a bad decision.
Approach from fog or use Blink Dagger. Ping your target, check that allies can follow, then use Q—Berserker’s Call—to force nearby enemies to attack you.
The attacks you take build toward Counter Helix spins. Stay close enough for the spin to connect. E is passive; repeatedly pressing it will not help.
Use R when its damage can finish the target. A hero kill with Culling Blade resets its cooldown. If the target is still healthy, let your team deal damage first.

An ally standing beside you may have no mana or an ultimate on cooldown. Before a Blink–Call, check what follow-up is actually ready. A nearby portrait is not a damage plan.

A kill ends Battle Hunger. Look for a target who cannot easily finish a nearby creep. This makes your pressure harder to remove than casting it just before a free last hit.

If a chase loses vision and pulls you away from your team, stop and regroup. A caught enemy should open the map for your team, not drag everyone into the enemy’s next setup.
| Detail | What it means in your game |
|---|---|
| Call forces attacks; landed attacks build the Helix counter. The taunt and the spin have their own ranges, so catching a target does not make every spin connect. | |
| It damages the target over time and slows them while they face away from Axe. Killing a unit or destroying a building removes the debuff. | |
| A hero kill with the spell resets its cooldown, gives nearby allies temporary movement speed and armor, and grants Axe permanent bonus armor. |
We recommend Axe as the position 3 offlaner. That role gives him room to build initiation and survival items while creating space for his carry. It is our recommendation, not a measured lane percentage.
His basic spell sequence is straightforward, but starting fights takes practice. Begin with a familiar build and one clear target. Learning when to wait is just as useful as learning when to jump.
No. Counter Helix is passive and triggers after enough incoming attacks. Use the QWER panel above to check the base values at each ability level.
Buy it when reaching the enemy is the main thing stopping you from landing Call. Keep enough lane and survival items to do your job afterward. There is no single purchase minute that fits every match.
