Blink Dagger gets you into position instantly. Here is how to set up the jump, avoid a wasted purchase, and handle the damage lock that can stop your escape.
Blink Dagger teleports you to a nearby target point. It adds no health, armor or attack damage: you are buying positioning for a spell, a catch or a safe move.
Buy it when getting close is the missing part of your plan. A short-range disable is a natural fit. If you reach the target but immediately die without useful follow-up, fix your timing or survivability before spending more on an upgrade.
Use fog or a tree line to approach. Walking straight toward the target gives them time to retreat or hit you before you can jump.
Have your disable ready and your team close enough to help. Ping the target. Decide where you need to land for that spell to reach.
Jump to your chosen point and use your spell. Then decide whether to stay with your team or back away. The next move depends on the fight, not the combo you planned before it.

Small hits from enemy heroes can stop the jump just as effectively as a big spell. Avoid showing too early, and wait for damage over time to end before relying on Blink to leave.

Think about where your hero will stand after the jump. On Axe, that means Call range and room for allied follow-up. Landing beyond your team can turn an easy catch into a solo expedition.

Self-casting Blink sends you toward your team’s fountain. Try your self-cast settings in demo mode so the direction is familiar. It does not choose a safe landing spot for you.
| Detail | What it means in your game |
|---|---|
| Damage from an enemy hero or Roshan prevents Blink use for 3 seconds. Further qualifying damage restarts that wait. This is separate from the normal ability cooldown. | |
| Basic Blink Dagger is bought directly from the main shop. It has no components to assemble and no separate recipe fee. | |
| Overwhelming Blink, Swift Blink and Arcane Blink build from basic Blink. The recipe panel above shows every component, recipe fee and the remaining cost if you already own Blink. |
Enemy-hero or Roshan damage applies a short lockout. Wait until that lock and the regular cooldown are both clear. Repeated damage can keep delaying the item, so it is not a guaranteed escape after a fight starts.
Basic Blink does not add health, armor or attack damage. Its value is the position it gives you. That is why a good follow-up spell and enough survivability matter.
Usually, our advice is to keep basic Blink while solving more urgent needs. Upgrade when its extra effect matters more than your next survival or team item. Compare the three paths above instead of upgrading automatically.
No. It ranks how often Blink appears in heroes’ end inventories in our dated OpenDota pro-match sample. An item may be sold or upgraded before the game ends, so these rates are not purchase rates or item win rates.
