Why pick Sniper?
Pick Sniper when your team can protect a backline damage dealer and needs steady lane pressure, siege damage, and long-range cleanup.

Long-range pressure and patient positioning. Keep an escape route behind your firing line.
Sniper is a ranged mid hero who controls approaches with Shrapnel and deals damage from behind his team.
Pick Sniper when your team can protect a backline damage dealer and needs steady lane pressure, siege damage, and long-range cleanup.
Avoid Sniper when your lineup lacks frontline control or the enemy can repeatedly reach the backline without committing resources.
The common mistake is standing still during Take Aim, gaining range while giving divers an easy route to your position.

Our picks, based on how the spells work together.

Berserker's Call gathers enemies around Axe, giving Sniper a clear safe target area for Shrapnel and attacks.

Corrosive Haze reduces armor and supplies vision, making Sniper's physical attacks more punishing against a revealed target.

Dragon Knight can absorb the opening attention and stun a nearby enemy while Sniper attacks from behind him.

Frost Shield reduces attack damage against an ally protecting Sniper, while slows discourage pursuit.

Bloodlust improves Sniper's attack speed and movement, helping him reposition between volleys.

Phantom Strike instantly crosses Sniper's preferred distance, while evasion can undermine his attack damage.

Blink ignores much of Sniper's spacing, and Mana Break makes repeated spells harder to sustain.

Meat Hook can drag Sniper out of his backline, where Rot and Dismember punish his low mobility.

Fissure can block Sniper's retreat and chained stuns punish him when allies cluster nearby.

Haunt creates global pressure on Sniper and Reality can bring Spectre directly onto his firing position.

Sniper is a ranged mid hero who controls approaches with Shrapnel and deals damage from behind his team.
Sniper is a ranged Agility hero. Our recommended role is mid.
Sniper is a Mid damage dealer who wants space, vision, and a stable front line. He punishes enemies walking through open lanes, then finishes damaged targets from far away. Choose him when allies can hold attackers in place. If opponents reach him freely, his damage window ends quickly.
In the middle lane, use Shrapnel to secure a contested wave or discourage an opponent from walking toward the ranged creep. Do not spend every charge merely for damage. Save one when the enemy threatens a rune path or commits forward, because the slow and vision create room to retreat.
Before a fight, choose a firing lane behind allies and keep an escape route open. Cast Take Aim when enemies must cross that lane, accepting its self-slow only when distance is already secure. Focus the closest dangerous target, then use Assassinate to finish a fleeing hero after they leave protection.
Start with inexpensive attributes and regeneration, then use Bottle to keep contesting runes and waves. Maelstrom is the suggested farming core because it clears lanes without forcing Sniper close. Buy Hurricane Pike against divers and Black King Bar against disabling spells. Add damage only after you can keep attacking safely.

Place Shrapnel on a tree line or ramp before an enemy escapes through it. The vision removes their hiding place while the slow makes their path predictable. This also lets allies aim follow-up control without blindly entering dangerous ground.

Wait until allies have stopped the enemy advance, then activate Take Aim and attack through the protected lane. Its self-slow is a liability if cast before threats show. The added range matters most when opponents cannot simply walk around your front line.

Use Assassinate on a retreating hero after their defensive tools are spent, rather than opening every fight with it. The aiming delay gives enemies time to react. Invisibility does not disjoint the projectile, so maintain vision and let the shot finish its path.
| Detail | What it means in your game |
|---|---|
| Shrapnel | Consumes a charge to launch a ball of shrapnel that showers the target area in explosive pellets. |
| Headshot | Attacks can deal bonus damage, knock enemies back and briefly slow them. |
| Take Aim | Passively adds attack range. Activating it increases range, vision and Headshot chance, but slows Sniper and narrows his vision. |
Sniper is suggested as a Mid hero because levels and farm let him pressure waves, threaten runes, and reach range items quickly. He works best as a protected backline damage source. Choose another role if your team needs its core hero to start fights or absorb the first enemy spells.
Maelstrom is the suggested first core because Sniper needs faster lane clearing without exposing himself for close farming. Hurricane Pike is valuable against heroes that dive directly onto him. Black King Bar is the response when disables prevent him from using the range and damage he has purchased.
New Sniper players should practice attacking while moving between safe positions instead of standing still at maximum range. Watch which enemy can cross the frontline first, and keep Concussive Grenade available after obtaining its Shard. A patient retreat often creates a better shooting lane than chasing one hit.
Assassinate is a long-range finishing shot that uses Sniper's attack damage plus bonus damage and briefly mini-stuns its target. It requires an aiming delay, so targets may receive help or protection before impact. A hero kill refreshes the spell, allowing Sniper to chain cleanup shots when fights break apart.
